Herbal Medicine Chest In Your Backyard

What could be less difficult than growing an herb garden with no effort? Of course, you’ll have to harvest your weeds, but you would do that anyhow: it’s known as weeding.

Spring is an specially fertile time for harvesting your weeds – roots and all – and turning them into medicines. Here then are some ideas on how to acquire, harvest, prepare, and use a baker’s dozen (13) of prevalent weeds that possibly already develop about you.

To make your medicines you’ll will need glass jars of numerous sizes with tight-fitting lids. And at least a pint each and every of apple cider vinegar (pasteurized), vodka (100 proof is greatest, but 80 proof will do), and pure olive oil (not added virgin) or good excellent animal fat such as lanolin, lard, or belly fat from a lamb or kid. You will also want a knife, a cutting board, and some rags to mop up spills.

In general, you will fill a jar (of any size) with coarsely-chopped fresh, but dry, plant material. (Do not wash any aspect of the plant except roots, if you are utilizing them, and be certain to dry those properly with a towel before putting them in your jar.) Then you will fill the jar with your menstruum, that is the vinegar, the oil, or the alcohol. Label well and enable to stand at room temperature, out of the sunlight for at least six weeks before decanting and making use of. (See my book Healing Wise for additional specific data on producing preparations.)

A field guide is beneficial for positively identifying your weeds. The 1 I like greatest is: A Guide to the Identification of New Zealand Frequent Weeds in Colour, complied by E. A. Upritchard. (Accessible from the New Zealand Weed And Pest Control Society, P.O. Box 1654, Palmerston North) This book even shows you how the weeds appear when they are emerging.

Prepared? OK! Let’s go outside with a plant id guide or skilled herbalist and see what we can uncover.

Shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa pastoris) is an annual in the mustard family. Cut the top half of the plant when it has formed its small heart-shaped “purses” (seed pods) and make a tincture (with alcohol), which you can use to quit bleeding. Midwives and girls who bleed heavily in the course of their period praise its prompt effectiveness. Gypsies claim it functions on the stomach and lungs as well. A dose is 1 dropperful (1ml); which may well be repeated up to four times a day.

Cleavers (Gallium aparine) is a persistent, sticky plant which grows profusely in abandoned lots and the edges of cultivated land. The whole plant is used to strengthen lymphatic activity. I cut the top two-thirds of each plant whilst it is in flower (or setting seeds) and use alcohol to make a tincture which relieves tender, swollen breasts, PMS symptoms, and allergic reactions. A dose is 15-25 drops (.5 – 1 ml); repeated as required.

Chickweed (Stellaria media) has many utilizes, which includes delicious salad greens. I cut the total top of the plant and eat it or use alcohol to make a tincture, which dissolves cysts, tonifies the thyroid, and aids in weight loss. A dose is a dropperful (1 ml), up to three occasions a day.

Daisy (Bellis perennis) is a prevalent perennial weed of lawns and open locations. Fairly unique from the native daisy (Lagenifera petiolata), the small English daisy is associated to feverfew and has similar skills. I use the leaves and flowers to make a tincture (with alcohol) or a medicinal vinegar which relieves headaches, muscle pain, and allergy symptoms. A dose is a dropperful of the tincture (1 ml), up to twice a day; or a tablespoon of the vinegar in the morning.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis) is a persistent perennial of lawns and gardens and one of the most beneficial known medicinal herbs in the world. (The native dandelion of New Zealand – Taraxacum magellanicum – is medicinal too.) Those who love a pure green lawn curse the sunny yellow flowers of widespread dandelion. But those who are prepared to see beauty anywhere (such as children and herbalists) treasure this weed. You can use any part of the dandelion – the root, the leaves, the flowers, even the flower stalk – to make a tincture or medicinal vinegar which strengthens the liver. A dose of 10-20 drops of the tincture (.five-1 ml) relieves gas, heartburn, and indigestion, as properly as promoting wholesome bowel movements. A tablespoon of the vinegar functions well, too. Even more importantly, taken before meals, dandelion increases the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thus growing bio-availability of lots of nutrients, specially calcium. The fresh or cooked green leaves are loaded with carotenes, those anti-cancer, anti-heart disease helpers. And the oil of the flowers is an important massage balm for sustaining healthy breasts. (There’s lots far more info on dandelions in Healing Wise.)

Dock, also referred to as yellow dock, curly dock, and broad dock is a perennial plant, which my Native American grandmothers use for “all women’s problems.” The Maori call it paewhenua or runa. It is an additional plant that disagrees with sheep, specially when the land is overgrazed. I dig the yellow roots of Rumex crispus or R. obtusifolius and tincture them in alcohol to use as an ally when the immune program or the liver needs assist. A dose is 15-25 drops (.5-1 ml). I also harvest the leaves and/or seeds throughout the growing season and make a medicinal vinegar, taken a tablespoon at a time, which is employed to raise blood-levels of iron, lower menstrual flooding and cramping, and balance hormone levels. If the chopped roots are soaked in oil for six weeks, the resulting ointment is helpful for keeping the breasts healthy.

Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris) and Ragwort (Senecio jacobea) are hardy perennials that have a reputation for poisoning livestock, like their cousin tansy. Even though not beneficial for sheep, these two Senecios are some of the world’s most ancient healing plants, having been observed in a grave 60,000 years old. You can use the flowering tops and leaves with your alcohol to make a tincture which acts slowly to tonify the reproductive organs, ease PMS, and cease severe menstrual discomfort. A dose is five-10 drops (.2-.5 ml) per day, put to use only as soon as a day, but for at least three months. (A bigger dose is utilised to speed up labor.)

Mallows (Malva neglecta, M. parviflora, M. sylvestres) develop nicely in neglected gardens and are surprisingly deep-rooted. The flowers, leaves, stalks, seeds, and roots are rich in sticky mucilage which is greatest extracted by soaking the fresh plant in cold water overnight or longer or by producing a medicinal vinegar. The starch is extraordinarily soothing internally (easing sore throats, upset tummies, heart burn, irritable bowel, colic, constipation, and food poisoning) and externally (relieving bug bites, burns, sprains, and sore eyes). The leaves, flowers, and bark (in particular) of the native Hohere (Hoheria populnea) are utilised in precisely the identical way by Maori herbalists.

Plantain, also referred to as ribwort, pig’s ear, and the bandaid plant is a well-known weed of lawns, driveways, parks, and playgrounds. Identify it by the five parallel veins running the length of every single leaf. You could come across broad leaf plantain (Plantago significant) with wide leaves, or narrow leaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata) with lance-thin leaves. Either can be utilised to make a healing poultice or a soothing oil widely regarded as one of the most beneficial wound healers about. Not only does plantain raise the speed of healing, it also relieves pain, stops bleeding, draws out foreign matter, stops itching, prevents and stops allergic reactions from bee stings, kills bacteria, and reduces swelling.

Try a poultice or a generous application of plantain oil or ointment (created by thickening the oil with beeswax) on sprains, cuts, insect bites, rashes, chafed skin, boils, bruises, chapped and cracked lips, rough or sore hands, baby’s diaper area, and burns.

To make a fresh plantain poultice: Pick a leaf, chew it well and place it on the boo-boo. “Like magic” the pain, itching, and swelling disappear, quick! (Yes, you can dry plantain leaves and carry them in your initial aid kit. Chew like you would fresh leaves.)

To make plantain ointment: Pick massive fresh plantain leaves. Chop coarsely. Fill a clean, dry, glass jar with the chopped leaves. Pour pure olive oil into the leaves, poking about with a chopstick until the jar is completely full of oil and all air bubbles are released. Cap well. Location jar in a smaller bowl to collect any overflow. Wait six weeks. Then strain oil out of the plant material, squeezing properly. Measure the oil. Heat it gently, adding 1 tablespoon of grated beeswax for each and every liquid ounce of oil. Pour into jars and allow to cool.

St. Joan’s/John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) This stunning perennial wildflower may perhaps be hated by sheep farmers but herbalists adore it. The flowering tops are harvested following they commence to bloom (traditionally on Solstice, June 21) and prepared with alcohol, and with oil, to make two of the most beneficial remedies in my first aid kit. Tincture of St. Joan’s wort not only lends 1 a sunny disposition, it reliably relieves muscle aches, is a powerful anti-viral, and is my first-choice treatment for those with shingles, sciatica, backpain, neuralgia, and headaches such as migraines. The usual dose is 1 dropperful (1 ml) as regularly as required. In extreme pain from a muscle spasm in my thigh, I utilised a dropperful every single twenty minutes for two hours, or until the discomfort totally subsided. St. Joan’s wort oil stops cold sores in their tracks and can even relieve genital herpes symptoms. I use it as a sunscreen. Contrary to preferred belief, St. Joan’s wort does not cause sun sensitivity; it prevents it. It even prevents burns from radiation therapy. Eases sore muscles, too.

Self heal (Prunella vulgaris) This scentless perennial mint is 1 of the great unsung healers of the world. The leaves and flowers contain additional antioxidants – which prevent cancer and heart disease, amongst other wholesome traits – than any other plant tested. And as aspect of the mint loved ones, self heal is imbued with lots of minerals, especially calcium, generating it an specially essential ally for pregnant, nursing, menopausal, and post-menopausal girls. I place self heal leaves in salads in the spring and fall, make a medicinal vinegar with the flowers throughout the summer time, and cook the flowering tops (fresh or dried) in winter soups.

Usnea (Usnea barbata) is that a lot of-stranded grey lichen hanging out of the branches of your apple trees or the Monterey pines planted in the plantation over there or in pretty much any native tree in areas of the South Island Alps, where it is recognized as angiangi to the Maori. If in doubt of your identification: Pull a strand gently apart with your hands, searching for a white fiber inside the fuzzy grey-green outer coat. To prepare usnea, harvest at any time of the year, being cautious not to take too much. Usnea grows slowly. Place your harvest in a cooking pan and just cover it with cold water. Boil for about 15-25 minutes, or until the water is orange and lowered by at least half. Pour usnea and water into a jar, filling it to the top with plant material. (Water really should be no even more than half of the jar.) Add the highest proof alcohol you can invest in. Following 6 weeks this tincture is ready to work for you as a excellent antibacterial, countering infection anyplace in the physique. A dose is a dropperful (1 ml) as often as each two hours in acute circumstances.

Yarrow (Achellia millefolium) This lovely perennial weed is grown in lots of herb gardens for it has a multitude of makes use of. Cut the flowering tops (use only white-flowering yarrow) and use your alcohol to make a strongly-scented tincture that you can take internally to stop colds and the flu. (A dose is 10-20 drops, or up to 1 ml). I carry a small spray bottle of yarrow tincture with me when I’m outside and wet my skin every hour or so. A United States Army study showed yarrow tincture to be much more helpful than DEET at repelling ticks, mosquitoes, and sand flies. You can also make a healing ointment with yarrow flower tops and your oil or fat. Yarrow oil is antibacterial, pain-relieving, and extremely useful in healing all kinds of wounds.

Going through menopause …. I feel I'm going crazy, please help!?

Due to severe endometriosis, my doctor put me on Lupron shots (which me to be in menopause for 6 months) Im only 21 years old and have had six surgeries for endometriosis and have been 12 and this is more or less my last option other than a hysterectomy (sp?) In any case for women who have gone through menopause, what can you do to relieve the symptoms? I can not sleep. I've tried everything and nothing is helping. Because of this I am a grumpy all day. My emotions are crazy. One second I'm yelling at my husband threatened to divorce him (Our marriage has been perfect, but the little things as he leaves the toilet seat up is just making me crazy) and the next I'm laughing so hard about things stupid. Also, hot flashes are worse than I expected them to be. When we fall asleep, I woke up 10 minutes later because I'm too hot. I have the CA and I have as a fan as you can get. Does anyone have any advice?

I went through menopause due to hysterectomy 25. OMG the hot flashes will kill you. Not much can be done without hormone replacement therapy. There are a few things against which claim to help, but you have to ask the doctor if they will interfere with their other med. I had a very understanding husband, who just deal with it. Her husband, knowing what is happening is that going to help much. Maybe he has to go on a date and listen to the doc how and why they are going through what you understand and be better able to deal with it. As waves of heat, all I did was off the air in about 60 degrees, put a fan on high and sleep naked lol. Also, use a different blanket husband that way if you have Night Sweats that do not soak. Trust me that I appreciate it. Just put a blanket with you so you can put on and remove. You will adjust soon. If you have any other questions feel free to message me. Good luck.

Finding Relief Through a Natural Perimenopause Treatment

The majority of women who are in the age of 30 to 40 aren’t usually aware of perimenopause, or the stage that ultimately leads to menopause. For some, the difference is only negligible. But for others, the whole experience may be as daunting or even worse than actual menopause. The symptoms could include: hot flashes, decreased libido, irregular periods, urine leakage, mood swings, difficulty in sleeping and vaginal dryness. If you are experiencing any or all of the symptoms described above, you should consider seeing your doctor. The simplest way to get started with your perimenopause treatment should be to have it properly diagnosed first.

Medically speaking, perimenopause could begin from ages 30 to 40. Different women could have different symptoms and the condition can last from a few months up to 10 years. Perimenopause treatment methods are more often neglected because of the main focus on menopause itself. But if conditions described above are giving you serious discomfort, there is a natural perimenopause treatment that you may like. Naturally derived supplements provides relief to symptoms which could affect our own well being and disposition.

Medical research on these herbal supplements have been done since the late 1940s. Though they are primarily aimed at menopausal women, symptoms of perimenopause could be treated with these as well. Ingredients that have natural herbal extracts from mother nature could ease your transition and relieve conditions such as hot flashes, mood swings and reduced libido. One noteworthy ingredient for such perimenopause treatment supplement is the Soy Seed (Glycine Max). It contains phytoestrogens or naturally occurring plant estrogens which could lower estrogen levels for perimenopausal women and subsequently increase the same for postmenopausal women.

Vitamin E or d-alpha-tocopherol acetate, is a lifesaver for those of us who are suffering from hot flashes and post menopausal women that are experiencing vaginal dryness. One can can never go wrong with mother nature’s bounty. It’s a good thing for those of us who have had to suffer from endless occasions where no one, even in our family seems to understand.

Before the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study, most doctors attempted to push synthetic estrogens into all menopause women, because the current assumption was that menopause is an estrogen deficiency disease. Menopause women are bombarded with this concept in pharmaceutical estrogen ads, mainstream media and their doctors.

Indeed, menopause is associated with decreasing estrogen levels. Do these decreased levels of estrogen cause Menopause Symptoms? Estrogen supplementation relieves Menopause Symptoms, but it is not the evidence that estrogen deficiency is the cause. Aspirin stops headaches, but a headache is not an aspirin deficiency disease.

Menopause is like the autumn season when leaves are falling. Losing leaves is not a disease of trees, but a protective mechanism for the coming winter. Nature is doing nothing in vain. During menopause, estrogen levels are below that necessary for pregnancy, but sufficient for other normal functions. Menopause is the end of childbearing years, and the body does not need high levels of estrogen. Sufficient estrogen is essential to good health, but is dangerous when it is excessive.

In modern society, most women are estrogen dominant and suffering from estrogen dominance symptoms, such as breast swelling and tenderness, depression, bloating and excessive vaginal bleeding. Doctors are prescribing them more estrogens. Back in 1941, a scientist reported that estrogen is a carcinogen. This explains the current epidemic of breast and ovarian cancer.

So, estrogen treatment of menopause is premature. There is no study on the relationship between estrogen deficiency and menopause symptoms. Compared with our grandmother’s generation, and Asian women, it is easy to find that menopause symptoms are caused by industrialized cultures’ deviation from a healthy lifestyle. In fact, menopause symptoms respond very well to diet, exercise and herbs.

How to Naturally Manage Your menopause Symptoms

menopause. The word is synonymous with Night Sweats and hot flashes but the information seems to stop there. Although these are common symptoms, every woman experiences it in a unique way. The average age for menopause is 51, however most women will begin to feel a change physically, mentally and emotionally before they even begin to meet the definition of menopause.

Before officially entering menopause, estrogen levels decrease around the age of 35. Estrogen plays a large role in maintaining the health of nearly all tissue in the body, affecting bone density, cholesterol levels, skin quality, cardiovascular health and moods. Without sufficient estrogen, the body suffers from a hormonal imbalance. This period is known as peri-menopause and is characterized by hot flashes, Night Sweats, headaches, urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, irregular menstruation, mood swings, irritability, reduced libido and inability to concentrate.

Peri-menopause is not a direct path to menopause, as women often drift in and out of it over the course of several years. The severity and length of it has been linked to the amount of stress a woman has experienced over her lifetime and is happening at a younger age than ever before. To relieve symptoms, there are a variety of estrogen supplements and natural remedies available. Recent studies have found that natural supplements focused around isoflavones, such as Promensil, are highly effective.

Legumes, the source of isoflavones, are not all created equal in terms of beneficial power for women. There are more than 1,000 types of isoflavones in plants, however only four have been shown to benefit women going through menopause: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A. Most legumes only carry a few of the isoflavones. Soy, which is often used in natural supplements, only contains daidzein and genistein. Promensil, which focuses around red clover, contains all four isoflavones as well ten to twenty times the quantity found in soy- the next richest source.

Red clovers have been used in medicine for years, treating everything from skin eczema to cancer. Because it contains all four isoflavones it is able to regulate the rapidly fluctuating hormones of menopause. High estrogen levels are suppressed and when levels are low the isoflavones mimic the estrogen your body naturally produces. Red clover is also a diuretic, helping the body rid itself of excess fluids, which is beneficial for women that experience water weight gain during menopause.

It is important to help treat the visible symptoms of peri-menopause to help with the transition to post menopause. Not only are you helping to relieve the discomfort, but also prevent long-term invisible symptoms. These symptoms, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, can severely affect the quality of a woman’s life. Promensil has been proven to support bone density and cardiovascular health during peri-menopause as well as offer supplements specifically for postmenopausal women.

The transition to post menopause can be a long and somewhat frustrating journey, but there is help and support out there. Women are more vocal about their experiences, and demand treatment that is safe, effective and natural. Promensil’s extensive testing has proven that natural supplements can be just that and without the side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy. Menopause Treatment should be about making women feel like women, naturally.

Underarm Sweating Turn-offs

Studies show that around 35 of the population is affected by hyperhidrosis. So what’s new you might ask. We are talking about a serious sweat problem wherein your hands, feet or underarms are sweating all the time. Simply put, it is a condition that makes you sweat continuously due to outside factors. This situation is called excessive underarm sweat.

If you display these symptoms it is probably time to read up on hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis means too much sweating. In this situation, your palms, underarms, face and feet experience too much sweating.

This condition can cause disruption in your life. This condition not only strains your interpersonal relationships but also limits your social involvements. Hyperhidrosis comes in different forms that cause disturbance among the patients.

Your diet is the best way to alter if you want natural way of healing. Be aware of sweat-causing foods such as caffeine, sugar and spicy foods. Aside from changing your eating habits, you can try medication and surgery.

While for those who have never had to suffer from it, yes, it is hard to think the social discomfort and shame that this condition can cause. For example a person who experiences excessive underarm sweating may find it difficult to handle everyday social situations that ask them to mingle closely with others.

This condition can create trouble not only to the personal and social lives of patients but also to their professional lives. Hyperhidrosis, once affects people, brings them low self-esteem and isolation from peers.

The cost will eventually balloon especially when the treatment needs to be done again and again. So try to know more about any process you want to undergo because you might be hurt twice, the treatment itself and the bills. Remedies for underarm sweating that work only for a week or a month are simply ineffective. However, those that work for a long time are expected to be very expensive. Instead, look for perspiration remedies that will work for a long time.

Make sure that you use the natural way. Usually, medications are effective against excessive underarm sweat but they also naturally have side effects. To have unnatural sweating is not easy.
